What do the Token Manager values 'Persistent' and 'Volatile' mean?

The Token Manager value controls how tokens are persisted.

  • Persistent mode tokens will be stored on the database indefinitely (until your company decides to delete them). This is the default behavior
  • Volatile mode tokens will be stored only for 30 minutes and then securely deleted. (Note: 30 mins is the default time limit, you can configure this in the dashboard rules editor). This is useful when you cannot keep some information in you system for compliance reasons but still need to use that information for other business critical requests (e.g. getting PIN or CVV from a client and using that value to process a request to third-party card processor).

Note: you can reveal tokens only with rules that correspond to the same Token Manager mode  that they were created with. For example, if you have a rule to redact PIN value with Volatile storage, a revealing rule with Volatile storage will work for that token but revealing rule with Persistent storage will not work and vice versa.
